Understanding ADHD

What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that affect a child’s ability to function at home, school, and in social settings. In Bangladesh, ADHD is increasingly recognised, and families are discovering that early support can make a remarkable difference.

There are three presentations of ADHD, and understanding which one your child has guides the best approach:

Predominantly Inattentive — Often called “the daydreamer.” Difficulty sustaining focus, following through on tasks, organising work, and remembering daily activities. Frequently missed in girls.

Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive — Constant movement, difficulty sitting still, talking excessively, acting without thinking, and struggling to wait their turn in class or at home.

Combined Presentation — The most common type, showing significant symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity across multiple settings.

Signs to Watch For

All children are active and sometimes inattentive. These signs become a concern when they are persistent, present in multiple settings, and significantly impact your child’s daily life.

🧠 Difficulty Sustaining Attention
Struggles to focus on tasks, homework, or conversations for age-appropriate lengths of time. Frequently shifts from one activity to another without finishing.

🏃 Constant Physical Movement
Difficulty sitting still in class or at the dinner table. Always climbing, running, or fidgeting even when the situation requires being calm and seated.

Acting Without Thinking
Blurts out answers before questions are finished, interrupts others frequently, has difficulty waiting for their turn in games or queues.

📚 Difficulty Following Instructions
Seems to listen but does not follow through on multi-step instructions. Frequently loses homework, school supplies, or personal belongings.

😤 Emotional Dysregulation
Quick to frustrate, has intense emotional reactions that seem disproportionate. Difficulty calming down once upset, or rapidly cycling through moods.

🗓️ Poor Sense of Time & Organisation
Struggles to manage time, plan ahead, or keep belongings organised. Homework takes much longer than expected, routines feel chaotic.

💬 Excessive Talking
Talks non-stop, has difficulty with conversational turn-taking, or speaks at inappropriate times in class even after being reminded repeatedly.

🌙 Sleep & Routine Difficulties
Trouble falling asleep, restless nights, or difficulty waking up. Morning routines are a daily struggle that affects the entire family.

Our Assessment Approach

Evidence-Based ADHD Assessment

We use multiple standardised tools and gather information from home, school, and clinical observation for a thorough and accurate evaluation.

📋

Conners-3

The Conners 3rd Edition rating scales collect detailed information from parents, teachers, and the child (if age-appropriate) about attention, behaviour, and executive functioning across settings.

📊

SNAP-IV

The Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham rating scale directly maps to DSM-5 criteria for ADHD. It helps quantify the severity of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms in a structured manner.

🧠

BRIEF-2

The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function assesses planning, organisation, working memory, and self-regulation — the “management system” of the brain that is often affected in ADHD.

🖥️

CPT-3

The Continuous Performance Test is a computer-based measure of sustained attention, impulsivity, and vigilance. It provides objective data that complements parent and teacher reports.

What to Expect

Our ADHD evaluation is thorough yet family-friendly. Here is how the process works from your first call to your personalised support plan.

1

Parent Interview & History

A 60-minute conversation where we learn about your child’s behaviour at home, school performance, social relationships, family history, and your specific concerns. We also send rating forms to teachers.

2

Clinical Assessment

Your child completes the CPT-3, cognitive screening, and interactive tasks while our psychologist observes attention patterns, activity levels, and problem-solving strategies in a structured yet relaxed setting.

3

Integrated Analysis

Our team integrates parent, teacher, and clinical data. We look at the full picture — ruling out other causes, identifying co-occurring conditions, and determining the ADHD presentation type most applicable to your child.

4

Feedback & Strategy Session

We share results clearly and compassionately. You leave with a detailed report, practical strategies for home and school, behavioural management techniques, and a clear roadmap for ongoing support in Bangladesh.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ADHD just “bad behaviour” or poor parenting?

Absolutely not. ADHD is a recognised neurodevelopmental condition with a strong biological basis. It is not caused by parenting style, diet, or screen time. Children with ADHD have genuine differences in brain development that affect attention and self-regulation. Understanding this helps families move from blame to support.

At what age should I have my child evaluated?

ADHD can be reliably evaluated from age 4 onwards, though many families seek assessment when school demands increase (ages 6–8). If your child’s teachers or family members have expressed concerns, or if daily life feels significantly harder than it should, an evaluation can provide clarity at any age.

Will my child definitely need medication?

Not necessarily. Treatment for ADHD often starts with behavioural strategies, parent training, and school accommodations. Medication is one option that can be very effective for some children, but our team discusses all approaches with your family. You are always part of the decision-making process.

Can ADHD co-exist with other conditions?

Yes, ADHD commonly co-occurs with learning disabilities, anxiety, ASD, and behavioural challenges. Our comprehensive evaluation screens for these co-occurring conditions to ensure nothing is missed and your child receives the right combination of support.

How can schools in Bangladesh support children with ADHD?

Many schools in Bangladesh are increasingly open to accommodations. Our report includes specific school recommendations — such as preferential seating, extra time for tests, movement breaks, and modified homework expectations. We also offer to speak directly with teachers when families request it.
